aberfeldy packaging
overview
During my internship at Powderkeg, we were commissioned to design a limited-edition packaging system for ABERFELDY in collaboration with Edinburgh-based artist Steven Cox.
The brief required a structural solution that could house the artist’s vibrant work while maintaining Aberfeldy’s premium "Golden" aesthetic. The objective was to create a box that ensured a precise, secure fit for the bottle while offering a sophisticated "reveal" experience.
my impact
Working alongside Lead Designer Kristian Karban, I contributed to the conceptual development of the product’s materiality, functionality, and overall aesthetic. I was responsible for translating our brainstormed concepts into 3D models using SketchUp.
These visualisations were then photoshopped into the final presentation deck, allowing the client to evaluate the physical form and scale of the packaging before moving into production.

the artist
This unique partnership bridges the world of fine whisky with contemporary art. After visiting the distillery in Aberfeldy, Steven Cox developed a color palette directly inspired by the rich, varied landscape surrounding the site.
His process involved a series of artwork tests to explore atmospheric depth, eventually resulting in the final blue, orange, and gold composition, which is a tribute to the profound sense of place found at the distillery.
Behind the artwork

the presentation
Upon receiving the artwork assets, we developed three distinct design directions. We implemented a tiered system (Bronze, Silver, and Gold) with each option scaling in production cost and aesthetic complexity. This allowed the client to make an informed decision based on both budgetary requirements and visual impact.
We were pleased when the client signed off on Option 3, the most ambitious iteration. This version showcases the expressive artwork against a high-contrast, black textured paper, featuring a golden interior reveal that honors ABERFELDY’s core brand identity.
